Founder of Talamo Hatch Laser Eye Consultants, Dr. Talamo is well known regionally, nationally and internationally as a leader, innovator and educator in the field of refractive surgery. He was the first surgeon in MA to perform all-laser LASIK utilizing the femtosecond laser and is considered an expert on the subject of emerging technologies for refractive cataract surgery.
As a highly experienced refractive, cataract, and corneal transplant surgeon, Dr. Jonathan Talamo has been performing laser vision correction surgery since 1990, when he became one of the first ophthalmologists in the United States to perform excimer laser surgery.

Dr. Talamo was an investigator for many of the early clinical trials that led to FDA approval of laser vision correction technology--becoming the medical director of The Laser Eye Center of Boston, one of the first private refractive surgery centers in New England. Dr. Talamo has performed thousands of PRK and LASIK surgeries, and has trained hundreds of surgeons all over the world in these techniques. Having undergone LASIK surgery himself, Dr. Talamo is uniquely qualified to offer advice to his refractive surgery patients.
An early adopter of many new and improved surgical technologies, Dr. Talamo was the first surgeon in Massachusetts to perform all-laser LASIK surgery using the Intralase femtosecond laser, LASIK surgery for farsightedness (hyperopia), and INTACS corneal ring correction for myopia (nearsightedness) and keratoconus (warping of the cornea). Additionally, he has expertise with other important emerging new technologies for vision correction, including the Visian implantable contact lens (ICL) as well as the accomodating crystalens and the multifocal restor intraocular lenses to correct for both near and distance vision.

Dr. Talamo has long been actively involved in teaching and professional organizations which set standards for Ophthalmology, having served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Refractive Surgery as well as on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Preferred Practice Patterns Panel of The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Ethics Committee of the AAO, and as an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. Locally, Dr. Talamo has been a staff member of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary since 1990, where he carries the rank of Surgeon as well as Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School.
After attending Cornell University and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Talamo completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Wilmer Institute of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and a Cornea fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School. He went on to serve as Director of the Cataract Consultation Unit and Corneal/Refractive Surgery Units at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary before entering private practice in 1995.
Dr. Talamo is well known regionally, nationally, and internationally as a leader, innovator, and educator in the field of refractive surgery. He published one of the first major textbooks on laser vision correction surgery, "The Excimer Manual", and has authored over 80 scientific articles, reviews, and book chapters. Dr. Talamo is a recipient of an Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and has lectured all over the world on topics related to refractive surgery. He is also well respected locally, having recently been listed as a “top doctor” by Boston magazine and as one of the “Best Doctors in America” several years running by Best Doctors, a non-profit organization that ranks and recommends physicians locally and nationwide. Dr. Talamo is frequently consulted by the media as an authority on recent developments in eye surgery. He has been interviewed by national magazines such as Vogue and has appeared locally on WBZ, WHDH, WCVB, WLVI, WSBK and NECN TV newscasts as well as numerous radio talk shows.
When he is not working, Dr. Talamo enjoys spending time with his family, skiing or on the water, where he can be found windsurfing much of the year despite the intemperate New England weather.
