Intralase Enabled Keratoplasty (IEK) is a revolutionary way of performing corneal transplant surgery. IEK is the first of its kind to incorporate the Intralase refractive laser with cornea transplant surgery, making exceptional results more possible than ever before. Unlike conventional corneal transplant surgery known as Penetrating Keratoplasty (PKP) or Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK), the IEK procedure utilizes Intralase Excimer laser technology to create the incision into both the donor and the recipient tissue. This method allows the surgeon to prepare the donor and recipient tissue in a similar fashion with the precision of the IntraLase laser, so the donor cornea fits almost perfectly into the recipient's eye. THe higher the accuracy of fitting lowers the chances of astigmatism and increases the chances of quicker recovery.

Dr. Hatch performs IEK on patients undergoing either Penetrating Keratoplasty (PKP) or Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK). During the consultation process, Dr. Hatch will review the various treatement options that are most suitable for any patient requiring corneal transplant surgery.
There are several significant advantages to the IEK operation compared to the standard corneal transplant operation. Conventional keratoplasty is performed utilizing specialized blades called trephines to cut the donor and host tissue. These blades are limited in that they can produce only a single type of cut. The IEK method allows the surgeon to utilize the Intralase laser to customize the incisions of both the donor and host tissues. Surgeons are able to choose the appropriate configuration for the corneal graft depending on the type of disease or opacity present. The IEK method allows a stronger union between the host and donor corneas, with fewer stitches that can be removed sooner, quicker restoration of vision postoperatively and a significant decrease in risk for wound dehiscence and infection after surgery.
The disadvantage to undergoing the IEK technique is that two stages are required for the procedure. First the laser treatment to prepare the corneas and then the cornea transplant is performed. Insurance companies do not recognize this technique; therefore out of pocket expenses are to be expected.
