Corneal transplant surgery is one of the most common tissue transplant procedures whereby the cornea - the clear surface on the front of the eye - is replaced with the tissue of a donor eye. The most common cause for corneal transplantation is an acquired or inherited dysfunction of the corneal endothelium, which is the layer of tissue responsible for maintaining corneal clarity. Occasionally, either through disease or injury, the cornea is damaged to a point where light can no longer effectively pass through it, resulting in reduced vision. When indicated by an ophthalmologist, a corneal transplant procedure may be performed which replaces the damaged cornea with a clear donor cornea.
Because corneal transplant procedures include the transplant of foreign tissue into the eye, rejection of the tissue by the immune system of the recipient is the greatest risk. However, drugs can be used to hold back the rejection reaction both before it occurs and even after. Despite the availability of immunosuppressive drugs, the rejection rate for corneal transplants remains between 5% to 20% of the time.
Dr. Hatch has specialized her training in corneal transplant surgery to include both full thickness and partial thickness transplant surgery, utilizing Intralase laser technology (IEK) to severely reduce the chances of rejection.
